Hiya! It's been awhile since I've shown my face on our feed. I'm Gina, founder + principal designer at Marin interior design studio California Daydreams. As a mom to two young sons, I'm super passionate about designing beautiful + functional family homes. Warm, liveable homes that our tailored to our client's families and how they live. ⁣

Mornings always seem to be a rush to get the kids out the door, AKA morning mayhem. To reduce the chaos for this family, we made this corner of their living room much more functional. We removed the chair (which is where backpacks were previously stashed) and designed this mudroom corner with hooks for backpacks + bags and plenty of shoe storage. ⁣
⁣

That time we relocated our client's washer/dryer to turn a half bath into a full bath - adding a ton of functionality + value to the home. Now the home has a second full bathroom for their preteen daughter to get ready in the morning before school. Swipe to see the before.⁣

We're headed to Vegas on Monday for two straight days of checking out the new furniture + decor from our trusted vendors. Investing in trips to Market is something we do every year to see all of the new product in person and sit test for our clients so they can feel good about our recommendations.⁣

A week later, our hearts continue to be heavy for LA. As a business focused on home and creating personalized sanctuaries for families, it is absolutely heartbreaking to see the dreams and irreplaceable items lost. 🤍⁣

We took a pause from posting here to avoid adding noise so those impacted can connect with the many resources being posted on IG, but we're working behind the scenes to help those in need. ⁣

On that note, we have a collection of new and like-new items (pillows, runners, decor, etc) that we would love to give to someone who has lost their home in the fires. This little desk is one of my favorite additions to our Greenbrook project. The room is large, but was previously only used as a playroom. With three school-aged boys, our clients felt like they were outgrowing their home but wanted to stay put if they could make it work. We transformed the playroom into a playroom/family room combo and added this desk in the corner as an extra homework area.⁣
⁣
Not only is the desk a beauty, it's also *super* functional with a docking drawer to charge the boys' devices and keep them out of their bedrooms, a printer cabinet, an acrylic topper for easy cleanup, and a pinboard so artwork has a home (instead of randomly being taped up on the walls - if you know, you know).⁣
⁣

The primary bathroom remodel of our Bel Aire project in Tiburon was a massive transformation. It was originally built as a locker room style bathroom for the previous owner's four kids, and did not function well as a primary bathroom. We completely reworked the floorplan to create a primary retreat with all the spa vibes!⁣

The beautiful built-ins that anchor the family room at our Larkspur Creek project were actually existing, but looked very different. To stretch the budget (and be kind to our planet), we modified the existing bookcases to meet the aesthetic we were after and functional needs. ⁣
⁣
Drawers were added for more toy storage, the shelves were swapped for stained white oak to add interest, picture lights were added for layered lighting in the room, and a fresh coat of white paint + new hardware gave them a fresh look.⁣

Where we ended —> where we started. The guest bathroom at our Sonora project got a complete refresh earlier this year.

Our client’s vision was neutral transitional with some sage green and muted green and we love how it turned out!

Originally the bathroom had a very tight entry as the vanity was large and the door to the space is angled. We couldn’t move any walls, so we sourced a smaller vanity (that still has ample storage) and had it installed centered in the space instead of the corner in order create better flow around the bathroom door.

Next up on the tour of our favorite before + afters from photoshoots this year: the dining room of our Larkspur Creek project! We sourced a long white oak table for hosting family and friends and a linear glass light fixture that defines the dining space without disrupting the sight lines from the kitchen to the living room (gotta be able to see the TV from the kitchen when the big games are on!).⁣
⁣
The bulky built-in hutch was removed to improve the flow of the space (don't worry, they have a lot of storage!). Swipe to see the before - which to be clear was taken right before demo with temporary furniture so the construction team could meet and eat lunch.⁣

Up first, this primary bathroom in San Rafael which was completely reconfigured to better use the space. Now there's a much bigger shower with a bench + a separate hamper and linen cabinet!⁣

Our client had her heart on white oak cabinetry in the kitchen of their new home, but with the tight project timeline and the goal of stretching the budget, I knew we had to get creative. While the original cherry cabinetry was not the vibe (swipe for before), it was in great condition and the layout of the kitchen worked well.⁣
⁣
Instead of ripping it all out, we had the perimeter cabinetry painted a creamy white, and then worked with our cabinet team on a custom stain to tone down the cherry island. A matching hood vent cover was crafted from cherry to make a statement and hide the existing stainless hood. It may have taken three rounds of stain samples to get it just right, but the end result is *so* worth it. Plus it was a good decision for the budget, and the planet.⁣

The most rewarding part about our work is seeing our clients' reaction when the transformation of their home is complete. Construction is done, new furniture is in its place, shelves are styled, pillows fluffed. ⁣

I'm so so grateful that clients trust us with their most sacred spaces, and thinking about the core family memories that they'll make in their new home makes everything worth it!⁣
